(inscription). Voir aussi Mandragore,[1] que identifie "catoblepas".
English: Secrets de l'histoire naturelle, Manuscript Français 1377, fol. 20v, Egypt, and its fauna. Inscription mentions hippotaures and "cocodrilles", "parides", "trigides"(tigers??) difficult to identify in picture.
On the left are a leopard, hyena-like animal, a cub of an animal (or an otter-like animal); and a hybrid with head of a pikefish and a horse's body (a reverse hippocampus??). An animal looking like a banded mongoose occurs twice (basilisks?). Several dragons. Lion at far right. Center: ox on a pedestal, fed a sheaf of grass by two men. Mandragore lists "catoblepas" as keyword[2] An "otter" is the suggestion in the CORSAIR catalog for an equivalent scene in the Morgan Library ms.[3] |
