| Description | Lizard coloration depends on the combined action of three layers of cells (chromatophores) in the outer dermis. Xantophores containing long-wavelentgh reflective pigments are localized superficially, then a layer of iridophores (with a structure of intracellular guanine platelets which produce structural colours through light scattering), and a final layer of melanophores absorbing all light unreflected or unabsorbed by the two previous layers. Blue coloration in lacertids may be produced by combined changes in xanthophores and melanophores. Xanthophores might contain few or no pigments (axanthism), allowing light to interact with the iridophores, and melanophores may be highly developed absorbing all waveleghts not reflected by the iridophores. |
