Bloom High School, 10th Street, Chicago Heights, IL

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1931, this Art Deco-style building was designed by Royer, Danely and Smith to serve as a high school for Bloom Township, which contains the city of Chicago Heights, Illinois, and was originally founded in 1900. The building was expanded with additions in 1956 and 1976, which are located on the sides and rear of the original structure, and features frescoes by New Deal-era Works Progress Administration artist Edgar Britton and sculptures by sculptor Curtis Drewes. The building is clad in buff brick with metal-frame windows, an entrance tower with zig-zag motifs and limestone trim, metal spandrel panels, greenhouses, limestone trim surrounds at the main entrance doors, decorative patterned brickwork, and a gymnasium and an auditorium wing, a later addition to the building, flanking the building’s front facade. To the north and west of the original structure are various additions, clad in buff brick, which lack the same ornament and details that define the facades of the original structure. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Today, the building remains in use as a public high school.
