Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay. English: The first of the four consecutive and complete total lunar eclipses (tetrad), to occur in the next two years. The other three will occur Oct. 8 this year and April 4 and Sept. 28, 2015. Tetrads are part of a 565-year cycle. Between 1582 and 1908, there were no tetrads. In this century, there are eight! A total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, the Earth and the moon are in perfect alignment so that the Earth’s shadow completely covers the surface of the moon. The moon is always a full moon during a total lunar eclipse and it never goes completely dark. It appears reddish for the same reason that sunsets and sunrises often have a red tint. The actual colour of the eclipse is hard to predict because that’s influenced by the levels of pollutants and dust that are floating around the Earth’s atmosphere. The more dust there is, the deeper orange and red will be the colour of the lunar eclipse. As light passes through the atmosphere, the blue colors are scattered out of the path. Red and orange light passes through the atmosphere and is scattered into the shadow zone. If our planet had no atmosphere, then the moon would be completely dark during a total lunar eclipse.
