Blood Flower (Asclepias curassavica ) One look at this plants vivid red blooms and you will understand why Blood Flower is a suitable name for this tropical species of milkweed. The small flowers grow from a woody base and can reach approximately three feet high. In most regions in the Eastern Ghats, Koraput, Odisha. It is considered to be an annual because it is a tropical species. Hardy only to zone 8, it is grown as an annual in most areas, but it quickly reseeds and spreads. It is an erect herbaceous plant, the Leaves are arranged oppositely on the stems and are lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate shaped ending in acuminate or acute tips. The flowers are in Cymes with 10-20 flowers each. Bloodflower is normally fairly low maintenance and is normally quite easy to grow, as long as a level of basic care is provided throughout the year. Being aware of the basic soil, sun and water preferences will result in a happier and healthier plant. • Top plant for monarch egg laying • Monarch butterflies and others use as a nectar source • A favorite source of nectar fuel for the monarch migration • Showy red and yellow blossoms all summer • Seeding is not an issue in annual zones • Easy to transplant • Deer and rabbit resistant • Can Still flower while it produces seed- Blooms all season |
