Summary
[edit]DescriptionBlind street performer in a Mumbai local train station.JPG |
English: I saw this duo belting away classic Ghazal numbers on Andheri (Mumbai) station platform at 11 PM.
The blind man on tabla was very good with the percussions. He was singing too, in a rather bad voice. But I don't think he was singing for art's sake anyway. He was singing, because that earned him the precious patronage of the busy Mumbaikar hurrying to get into the next local train. The average patron gave him the generous two rupees (4 cents). An occasional reckless patron could be seen donating ten rupees, but that was rare. The accompanying guy on the harmonium had a tired look on his face and said, 'what for?' when I asked him if I could take a photo. I said it was for my pleasure. He didn't protest much after that. At the end of the photo session, I briefly debated with myself if I should give them twenty rupees or the princely sum of hundred ($2). I gave them the hundred in the end, but I don't know why I felt ashamed about it later.... |
