| Description | Crews place explosive charges at the excavation site for the Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway in Folsom, Calif., Feb. 10, 2012. Crews detonate explosive charges daily to loosen bedrock for removal. To date, they've removed about 75 percent of the more than 315,000 cubic yards of earth that remains to be excavated. In total, 3.5 million cubic yards (about 175,000 large truckloads) of excavation is required. The Sacramento District is scheduled to complete blasting in May 2012 in preparation to construct the spillway's control structure, essentially a second dam. The spillway is scheduled to be ready for use in 2017 and will allow Folsom Dam to release water sooner and more safely, helping reduce flood risk for the Sacramento region.
