Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Blast Beach. Further down the beach south of Nose's Point on the edge of the eroding layer of colliery waste. For description see 1539182

Right in the centre of the photo on the cliff top you can just make out the blue and white wind-socks of the art installation, 'Sky-field' 1540318 Reeds have colonised some of the wet areas below the cliffs on the left. Their action will help purify the mineral contaminated water and provide new wildlife habitats.

Ironically the tipping of mine waste on the beaches actually protected the cliffs from erosion by the sea and reduced the effects of seawater spray on the unusual cliff top plant life. Much of the natural vegetation that had colonised the upper parts of the beach, below the cliff=line, has already been severely damaged by salt-water inundation. The natural rate of erosion along the coastline is now being carefully monitored.
