Description |
English: Blanket, hand-woven cream wool with linear border on all four sides in dark brown, twill weave, web is open of the left hand side of the loom where two selvedges appear. Centre of web is on the right hand side at the fold. One of the webs (or cloths) is woven on neddles 1 and 2, and the other web, simultaneously, on 3 and 4. The warp is double-sly through the beater (red), but the web is single-sly, so warp and weft weaving must be of threads that make a balanced 50-50 web on a single- sly. Notes on weave by donor, from catalogue card. Donor states "at least 70 years old" but no accession date given. owner of blanket, Mr John Pearson Seddon of Grey Lynn was born in Alba, with a Paton and Baldwin mill, the first one established there. But his mother's clan, the McQueens, probably did the blanket work when in the Hebrides. It was part of the eldest daughter's dowry, and as well were used as barter. |
