Notes

blanket woven by Matthew Fowlds (1806-1907)

This blanket was used as a piece of clothing by South Canterbury farmer James Goldie, however blankets were one of the fundamental necessities of living required by the settlers. The simple black and white ‘hound’s-tooth’ check blanket with woven borders and fringe was woven by political reformist Matthew Fowlds, whose son George emigrated to New Zealand to avoid political persecution.
