Summary
[edit]DescriptionBlakethwaite Smelt Mill - geograph.org.uk - 890880.jpg |
English: Blakethwaite Smelt Mill Standing at the confluence of Gunnerside Gill with Blind Gill (just beyond the small bridge). Across the beck is the remains of the store where peat was stored for firing the two ore-hearths. The mill dates from 1821 and smelted ore from the Blakethwaite and Lowanthwaite mines. The poisonous fumes were drawn into a flue which ran up the steep gillside to the right.
Lowanthwaite is downstream and the ore would have transported down the track seen on the right of the gill. This way would also have been used to take out the smelted lead. Blakethwaite is above a mile upstream. |
