Title
Blade, single edged
Description
English: Iron knife, both ends broken. One end has a flat cross-section through which are two rivets c. 3mm in diameter and projecting on both faces, the longest projecting 9.9mm. The other end has a flattened, wedge shaped cross-section suggesting a cutting edge.

Length 137.7mm; Width 23.8mm; Thickness (maximum) 2.8mm; Mass 27.77g.

The form of this knife suggests that it was fitted with a 'scale-tang' handle made up of two plates secured by the rivets. Scale-tang knives begin in the 13th century at the earliest (Margeson 1993, 128) and so it is most unlikely that this object is associated with the early Anglo-Saxon grave-goods. Scale-tang knives were largely superseded by knives with 'bolster' handles in the 17th century.
