Notes | blackout curtain, Bassett family home, Herne Bay, WW2 Michael Bassett recalls the curtain hanging in his aunt's home, and recognised it as a blackout curtain because his father, Edward Bassett, was an ARP (Air Raid Precautions) blackout warden during World War Two, and Michael occasionally accompanied him on his rounds. He remembered his father saying that "women would put the elastic in to make the curtain hang nicely - but it gathered the top slightly and let out small chinks of light just near the top. A great irritation to the wardens." The blackout curtain has historical and social significance representing an aspect of life on the Homefront during WW2, both in terms of impact on domestic life and in terms of the activities of Air Raid and Emergency Precaution Schemes - Tangible example of response to blackout requirements - perished elastic along top- donor's father Edward Bassett (blackout warden WW2) said women would put elastic along top to make curtain hang nicely but it gathered the top slightly and let chinks of light out near the top which was a great irritation to the wardens. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
