Summary
[edit]DescriptionBlackhall Colliery 1.jpg |
English: Middle Street, Blackhall Colliery, County Durham at looking east.
Most of the village was presumably built by the colliery company and consists of parallel rows of cottages. They ran out of ideas on the street names: the "main" streets are West Street, Middle Street and East Street and crossing them are First Street, Second Street … right through to Eleventh Street! The Ninth Street junction is in the foreground of this picture. But unlike some modern developments, the inhabitants do not have to go far for the necessities of life, we see a "chippie" and Ray's off-licence and grocery store. It looks quite warm in this picture - but it is only a kilometre from the coast and the wind off the North Sea can make the place bitterly cold in winter. |
