Summary

[edit]
Description The imposing nose section of the A-12 - almost entirely built out of titanium. At the time the US didn't have anywhere near enough titanium so they discretely purchased it from the leading exporter at the time - the Soviet Union (also the primary target of the aircraft's spying)! Here you could see the cone shaped protrusions from the engine intakes - these moved back and forwards according to speed to allow the engine to perform all the way from takeoff right up to the punishing environment of Mach 3.2 flight.
