Animal characteristics: Height: 1.4-1.7 m; Weight: 800-1350 kg; Identification: The black rhinoceros has two horns on its nose, a pointed and prehensile upper lip, and hairless gray skin; Habitat: Tropical bushlands, grasslands, savannas; Diet: Herbivore: leaves, buds, shoots; Reproduction: Females give birth to a single calf at intervals of 2.5-4 years. Gestation lasts 15-16 months; Social Structure: Black rhinoceroses are generally solitary; Behavior: These animals can be ill-tempered; Status: Endangered: poaching for horns; Interesting Facts: There are approximately 3,100 black rhinoceroses left in the wild today. The horn is not a true horn, but rather it is made from thickly matted hair.
