Description

The Black Nazarene is a life size statue of Jesus Christ carrying a cross. The idol is carved from wood and is depicted with a dark skin. It was produced in Mexico in the 16th century, and brought to Philippines in early 17th century by Spanish friars. The idol is believed by Filipino Christians to be miraculous with powers to cure diseases just by touch. The Black Nazarene attracts devotion from Catholic devotees every Friday. On January 9 of every year, a major procession is held where the idol is carried through the streets of Manila. Over a million Christians throng the streets, in thanksgiving for answered prayers or to petition new prayers to the traveling idol. People carry towels and give it to the statue carriers so that they can touch the statue or wipe their sweat and return it back as a special towel. Along with Santo Nino (Child Jesus), the Black Nazarene is the most popular statue for devotional worship by Christians in the Philippines.
