Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Black Memorial Hall, Portree This building stands on the corner of Bank Street and The Green, and is currently unused.

I am grateful to Skye resident and geograph member, Dave Fergusson, who pointed me towards the following information from the Highland Council Am Baile website: "The building is the Black Memorial Hall, centrally situated at the top of Quay Brae, opposite the Royal Hotel. The Hall, known as the South Church at the time, was built in 1820 for the Established church. By the late 1930s only one Church of Scotland building was required and the present parish church on Somerled Square, the North church, acquired the seating and gallery from the South church as well as the congregation. After WWII when it was used as a store, the South church was redesignated the Black Memorial Hall after a longstanding minister, and continued as a community hall until the 1970s. It currently (2007) lies neglected and forlorn awaiting development"
