Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Black Hill TV Transmitter One of the most important installations in Central Scotland, this mast was originally built in 1957 to provide Scottish Television's 'Channel 10' service on VHF (405 lines B&W).

The BBC's services were broadcast from the nearby (and smaller) Kirk o' Shotts mast, and the location for both meant the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh could be served equally and at minimal cost. As the arrival of colour and 625 line transmission standard meant main transmitters were to be co-located, Black Hill was chosen not only for its height superiority, but it was easily upgraded.

This site in addition to standard TV transmissions, the mast also handles the digital multiplexes for Freeview. The smaller towers to the left feature microwave dishes and the signals from the broadcaster's distribution system are then relayed from the mast head. Kirk o' Shotts is now a 'radio only' mast, carrying FM and DAB radio broadcasts.
