Black Hand "Death Corner", Chicago

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Black Hand was not so much a single gang as much as a modus operandi that terrorized Chicago prior to the gangster era. Completely ruthless, they operated by sending extortion letters to people threatening fatal violence to them or their loved ones if substantial sums of money were not paid. Failure meant death. The notes were signed with a black hand imprint.

"Death Corner," seen here, was in the center of Little Italy in Chicago, sometimes called Little Sicily or Little Hell. Between January, 1910 and March, 1911, 50 bodies were dumped here. A fellow known as "Shotgun Man" murdered 15 of them.

The Black Hand gangs basically came to an end when they attempted to extort gangster Big Jim Colosimo in the early 1920s. Big Jim's right-hand man, Johnny Torrio, "negotiated" with Black Hand thugs, mostly by shooting them dead.

Located at Oak St. and Cleveland Ave. (looking east)

Note: Cleveland Ave., once known as Milton, is honorarily named after Dantrell Davis, a 7-year old boy who was killed by a gang sniper fire in 1992.
