Description

Black Forest Trail, Tiadaghton State Forest, Lycoming County.

The trail passes through the Allegheny Plateau region of north-central Pennsylvania, an area once called the Black Forest because of its dense stands of old-growth hemlocks, white pines, and northern hardwoods. Most of the forest was logged off by the early twentieth century.

This section of the trail, just west of Pine Creek Gorge, traverses a second- and third-growth forest of mostly oaks and other hardwoods. Conifers (hemlocks, spruces, pitch pines, and white pines) are widely scattered.
