Summary
[edit]DescriptionBlack Fives 44871 and 45407 in Gloucester railway station - geograph.org.uk - 4268369.jpg |
English: Black Fives 44871 and 45407 in Gloucester railway station. 44781 (unnamed) and 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier are at the front of a steam special. Both locomotives are members of a class of 842 4-6-0 locomotives, designed by William Stanier, built by the LMS (and later British Railways) between 1934 and 1951. 18 have been preserved. They are called Black Fives because of their colour and their 5MT power classification. MT stands for Mixed Traffic - the versatile class was built for both passenger and freight work. Only 4 Black Fives were originally named (in the mid 1930s). 45407 was not one of these. The name The Lancashire Fusilier was added after the locomotive was preserved. |
