35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Passeriformes; Family: Climacteridae; Genus: Climacteris; Genus species: Climacteris melanura. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 17-19 cm; Identification: The black-tailed tree creeper has a down-curved bill and a brownish black head and upperparts. There is no eyebrow and a dull rufous belly; Habitat: Forests, drier woodlands forest clearings, and eucalyptus along streams; Diet: Omnivore: insects, seeds and nuts; Reproduction: Males will establish and defend a territory through song. Four to six eggs are produced per clutch. Only the female incubates the young and both parents feed the young. Incubation lasts from 13 to 17 days; Social Structure: Outside of the breeding season, black-tailed tree creepers are solitary; Behavior: The black-tailed treecreeper bobs its tail when resting; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The legs of tree creepers appear disproportionately short, but this is a very functional design. Along with long toes and claws, the short legs enable them to cling closely to the side of trees as they search for food.
