35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Passeriformes; Family: Pycnonotidae; Genus: Pycnonotus; Genus species: Pycnonotus barbatus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 20 cm; Weight: 39 g; Identification: Overall, the black-eyed bulbul is mouse brown. Its head, face, and chin are black. Their underparts can vary from light brown to white. Their eyes are surrounded by a black wattle; Habitat: Rural and urban areas, wooded areas; Diet: Omnivore: fruit, insects, seeds, nectar; Reproduction: Black-eyed bulbuls are monogamous and solitary nesters. The laying dates vary by location. Females incubate 2-3 eggs for 12-15 days. The male feeds his mate during this time and also helps her care for the chicks after hatching; Social Structure: Flocks of up to 100 birds form during the nonbreeding season. Otherwise, black-eyed bulbuls are seen in pairs; Behavior: This species does not migrate, and they are territorial when breeding; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The black-eyed bulbul is probably the most common bird in Africa.
