35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Piciformes; Family: Capitonidae; Genus: Lybius; Genus species: Lybius torquatus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 20 cm; Identification: The black-collared barbet has a crimson face, throat and chest. The crown, hind neck, and upper breast are a glossy black color. Its upper parts are grayish-brown, and the lower breast to undertail coverts are yellowish-gray. Its underwing coverts are white; Habitat: Thornvelds, open forests; Diet: Omnivore: insects, fruit, berries; Reproduction: Barbets breed during any season of the year; Social Structure: These noisy birds are most often seen in pairs; Behavior: Due to the shape and length of their wings, barbets' flight is weak and seldom long-sustained. They are not migratory birds; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The beaks of barbets have obvious bristles which give them the appearance of having a beard, hence their name.
