the mountain: housing, parking, and office space, ørestaden, copenhagen 2005-2008. architects: project begun by PLOT, completed by jds architects and BIG. a radical reinterpretation of the courtyard or patio house as presented here in the so-called mountain dwellings by b.i.g. - bjarke ingels group. a single layer of stacked courtyard houses tops a parking house and architectural drama ensues. image 06 shows the great profile of this hybrid. the megastructures of the late sixties spring to mind. I need to check out reyner banham's definition of a megastructure from his "urban futures of the recent past" to see how close b.i.g. comes. bjarke mentioned paul rudolph, utzon, and verner panton during his improvised tour of the construction site. you may complete the list with mvrdv, koolhaas (with whom he trained) or rex and joshua prince-ramus according to personal temper and beliefs... www.big.dk www.jdsarchitects.com www.plot.dk |
