ed with bismuth paste No. 1. The endsof these gauze strips are allowed to come out through thegingivo-labial margin after most of the incision has beensutured. The nasal tampon is removed, and the patientremains lying on the side of the operated antrum to pre-vent the paste from escaping. The subsequent treatmentof the cavity filled with gauze strips is to remove them inabout two or three days, and either refill with similarstrips or inject bismuth paste No. 2. No definite data are given as toresults. In chronic suppuration of the sphenoid sinuses the bestone can do is to remove as much of the anterior wall aspossible and curet the diseased mucous membrane. Theobliteration of this cavity is impossible, as the retentionof the paste is difficult, but it can be materially reducedin size by packing it with gauze impregnated with bis-muth paste. As to the ethmoid labyrinth, when chronic suppurationis present within it, there is no question that the completeexenteration of every cell insures the best chances for apermanent cure. Unfortunately this is not possible inthe majority of instances on account of the anatomicalconditions. When, however, during this complete exen-teration at the time of operation an injection of bismuthpaste is made as a primary dressing (as described in
