Title
Bishop's Residence at St Joseph's Cathedral
Description
Horse drawn carriages drive down Broad Street, past the Bishop's Residence at St. Joseph's Cathedral. Built in 1848 by William G. Deshler, this two story stone house later came to be part of the church grounds of St. Joseph's Cathedral. Deshler's son John was born in the house in 1852, but the family moved on in 1859 when Deshler built a larger home on Broad and Third streets. In 1866, the land east of the house was purchased by the Church for the construction of St. Joseph's. In 1887, a few years after the Cathedral's completion, Bishop Watterson purchased the house for the Church from then-owner William B. Brooks. It was used as the Bishop's residence for many years until its demolition in 1949.
