Dipper National Park Service AMERICAN ROBIN (Turdus migratorius) The robin, with its cheery song, distinctive red-orange breast, and trusting habits, is perhaps the best known and best loved of all our native song birds. Because of its adaptability the robin thrives in almost any environ- ment. In Yellowstone and Grand Teton the robin is one of the most abun- dant breeding birds, breeding in virtually every environmental complex below timberline. Robins which breed in developed areas of the parks are as tame and trusting as the robins found in towns, city parks, and farm- yards; however, the backcountry hiker will encounter a wild robin whose temperament is more in keeping with its wild surroundings. The nest of the robin is grass-lined and mud-walled and the eggs are a beautiful turquoise blue.
