BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (Bucephala islandica) This handsome species is the most wide-spread duck in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. It can be found not only on the major rivers and streams of both parks, but also breeds on remote streams and ponds at virtually all elevations. The male goldeneye is beautifully marked with golden eyes, white facial crescents, purplish head, and boldly marked black and white body. The female is gray, with a white collar and a dark- brown head. Goldeneyes lay their eggs in tree holes near water, and for this reason predation on young goldeneyes by weasels, martens, and even occasionally otters is not uncommon. Many Barrow's goldeneyes remain in Yellowstone and Grand Teton throughout the winter, at which time they are joined by the common goldeneye, which also winters in the area.
