Down in the valley by theriver the sand was flying in stingingclouds, jerking the few remaining yellowleaves from the cottonwoods, ruffling thewaters of the Ninnescah, beating thepurple veil from the hedges where theautumn sun had tangled it, bending thelong reeds, and drifting in little moundsbeneath the wild-plum bushes. On the uplands where the curly buffalo-grass spread its thick brown carpet, thewhitened heads of the golden-rods bentbefore the wind, the sage-grass waved itslong yellow stalks, and the sunflowersrattled their bare stems and brown headstogether.
