hort,rapid hops up the trunks of trees andalong the limbs, passing again to thebottom by longer flights than in theascent. They make but short flightfrom tree to tree, but are capable offlying far when they choose. They build on the ground. Onenest containing young about a weekold was found on the surface of shelv-ing rock. It was made of coarse stripsof bark, soft decayed leaves, and drygrasses, and lined with a thin layer ofblack hair. The parents fed theiryoung in the presence of the observerwith affectionate attention, and showedno uneasiness, creeping head down-ward about the trunks of the neigh-boring trees, and carrying large smoothcaterpillars to their young. They search the crevices in thebark of the tree trunks and branches,look among the undergrowth, andhunting along the fenced for bunches ofeggs, the buried larvae of the insects,which when undisturbed, hatch outmillions of creeping, crawling, andflying things that devastate gardenand orchard and every crop of the field. 14

FROM very early times plants,animals, and even mineralshave played an important partin the expression of religiousideas and in the execution of religiousrites. Among the plants, sacred, andclosely allied to the mystic life of aportion of the human race, there isnone more interesting and rich in leg-end than the mistletoe. This was as-sociated with religious observances be-fore the time of Christ and was mem-tioned by our earliest historians. There are over seventy species ofthis peculiar plant. Both the Americanvariety (Phoradendron Havescens) andthe European, or true mistletoe (Vis-cuni album), belong to a family of par-asites, so called because they derivetheir nourishment entirely or in partfrom some other plant instead of takingit directly from the soil. Owing to thepresence of the green coloring matter(Chlorophil), in the stems and leaves,the mistletoe is not entirely parasitic,but is to a certain extent self-support-ing, drawing
