Text Appearing Before Image:
d spurge each havea place, and great bunches of bedstrawfill up the crannies till not a square inchof earth is visible. Some of the plants which help com-plete the perfect whole but which are lessnumerous and showy, are the tall deadstalks of angelica, parsnips in seed, milk-weed, ragweed, mallow, nettles, vervain, blackberry, and wild rose with scarletbolls; and this flanked on another sideby the densest of willow and thorn. Some of the finishing touches to thiscomposite picture are the huge greendragon flies, the brilliantly colored butter-flies and moths, and the catbirds and birdkindred which live in the heart of all thismagnificence, but manage to keep wellon the wing, especially when the sunshines bright and the air is soft and cool, and on days when a deep blue sky withgreat white clouds is the canopy. Mary Noland. The air is full of hints of grief, Strange voices touched with pain—The pathos of the falling leaf And rustling of the rain. —Thomas Bailey Aldricb, Landscape. 176
Text Appearing After Image:
THE STRIPED HYENA. (Hyaena striata.) The first Hyena in which I becameinterested Hved in a zoological gardenconnected with a well known park. I cannot claim that she was a beautifulcreature for, if all must be told, she hadthe same ugly appearance of every otherStriped Hyena. And yet her very ugli-ness made her somewhat interesting. She would look at me from her slantingeyes with an unsteady, uncanny expres-sion. Her thick head and neck, her stoutbody, her shorter hind legs and longerfront ones, causing her back to slopefrom shoulder to tail hke a small tobog-gan slide, gave her an extremely awk-ward look, I admit; and then she had butfour toes on each foot as is the case ofall members of the hyena family. Herbody was covered with rather long coarsehair of a yellowish gray color stripedwith black, her tail was short and bushy, and along the spine the hair grew longand stift, making a sort of mane. Herears were large, erect and devoid of hair, and her voice—well! it was somethingto star
