pause long enough tosing her bluebird song, then alighting onmy desk, she will make a queer medleyof the pens, pencils and so forth. Sheexamines every new thing and if it doesnot please the little midgets fancy shewill charge at it with rumpled feathersand snapping bill. She has her playthings too. Tooth-picks, a gaily colored marble and a tinybell are her familiar toys. She is quitevain and will stand many minutes beforea glass admiring herself in differentposes. She is shy of strangers and willprotest loudly if we attempt to take herfrom the cage when anyone strange toher is in the room. Her cage is her home and she objectsto a change of quarters. It is fairly abundant in thewestern portion of its range. It bears afew other common names, such as Law-yer, Long-shanks, and Pink-stockings. Of all the grotesque forms among ourwading birds, the Black-necked Stilts, Ithink, are the most prominent. Theirlegs are longer in proportion to the sizeof their bodies than are those of anyother birds, excepting the flamingoes. Inthe southern states, especially Louisianaand Texas, and also in southern Califor-nia, it is prob
