at the time ofbuilding the North Sea Canal. Someone insisted that the Hares, Rabbits,and Partridges knew of a supply in thesand hills, because they never came tothe wet polders to drink. At firstthe idea excited laughter. Then oneof the local engineers suggested thatthesand hills should be carefully explored,and now a long reservoir in the verycenter of those hills fills with waternaturally and supplies the entire town. All this goes to prove to our mindthat if Seals do not apparently drink,if Cormorants and Penguins, Giraflfes,Snakes, and Reptiles seem to carenothing for water, some of them doeat wet or moist food, while theGiraffe, for one, enjoys the juices ofthe leaves of trees that have theirroots in the moisture. None of theseanimals are our common, everydaypets. If they were, it would cost usnothing to put water at their disposal,but that they never drink in theirnative haunts can not be proved untilthe deserts have been explored andthe total absence of water con-firmed.—Ex.
