pink dots for nose and mouth, andlittle dents where the eyes would some-time open, in fact, three little homelessrabbits; their mother had been killedand they were most hungry, squeaking, forlorn orphans. Now Kitty Cloverhad a nest of very small babies, justtwo, three others having disappeared onthe first day. She is so good, said little I. I amgoing to see if she wont let the poorlittle bunnies get some dinner with herkitties. So I tucked them in very carefullybeside the kitty-babies. Sure enough,Kitty Clover did not resent the liberty, but, smelling of them cautiously at first, she then hospitably tidied them all overwith her rough tongue. As soon asthey felt her life-giving licking and hersoft fur, they poked their little noses ra-venously into the warm feeding-ground,and in a trice were luxuriating over thewarm, sweet dinner. Let me add that this is a true story, and that the generous cat motheredthese orphans until they were largeenough to jump out of the box. Amanda M. E. Booth. 32

The springtime is truly the paradise ofthe bird lover; at this period the feath-ered hosts which have been spendingthe winter in the far south begin theirnorthward journey to fill the woods andfields with beauty and song. Among thethousands of migrating birds which passnorthward to rear their young, theBrown Creeper generally passes unno-ticed, owing to its small size and the al-most perfect manner in which it is con-cealed by its sombre coloration. Noticehim as he creeps up yonder tree! Nowhe creeps up perpendicular like a wood-pecker, proping himself with his long, stifif tail, and again he creeps around thetree several times in his ascent. Unlikethe nuthatches, which delight to descendthe tree trunk head downward, theBrown Creeper always crawls upward. The manner in which this bird is con-cealed when on a tree trunk is truly won-derful. Its back is dark brown markedby se
