Thus several nests appeared indifferent stages of constructian but, ofcourse, not one was completed. Thiswell illustrates the persistent characterof these Kingbirds. Dr. J. G. Cooper,describing a nest which he found atSanta Barbara, California, says: Thisnest was built on a branch of a. low oaknear the town, was five inches wide, andconstructed of lichens, twigs, coarsegrass, and wool, lined with hair, and thefour eggs it contained were creamy-white, spotted with purple of two shadesnear the large end. In the building oftheir nests, however, any available ma-terials are used, such as twigs, stems ofplants, grass and sometimes rags andstrings. They are lined with hair, cot-ton, wool, strings, feathers, and in factany soft materials which may be at hand.They arc also known to construct theirnests, at times, in garden shrubbery.Frequently the nests arc fastened to the

He speaks of theirnotes as a discordant, clicking warblesounding like tshk-tsJi k-tshivait and notunlike the creaking sound of a rustydoor-hinge. Mr. William Rogers Lordin his Birds of Oregon and Washing-ton says of this Kingbird: Though aKing of the Birds, he is not, as is gen-erally supposed, a tyrant king, unless heis -very unlike his eastern counterpart,The King-bird. On the other hand, like the bulldog among dogs (unless the bull-dog has been spoiled in training), thebird is just and tolerant.
