The Red-headed Woodpecker, as itsname indicates, has a red head, inckid-ing the neck and breast; its back,primaries, secondaries, except the ends,tail and a very narrow strip around thetipper and forepart of the bill are steelor blue-black; its rump, under parts andends of the secondaries are white. AsMr. Burroughs says: His deliberate,dignified ways and his bright uniformof red, white and steel blue bespeakhim as an officer of rank. The sug-gestion has been made that because ofhis extensive range, usefulness and thefact that his colors are those of ourflag—red, white and blue—he insteadof the eagle, ought to be the nationalbird, and, for one, I am in sympathywith this suggestion.
