Scott, writing ofthe Birds of the Gulf Coast of Elorida,says of the Purple Gallinule: This isone of the species that in its migrationsis frequently blown out to sea in theGulf and I have had several individualsbrought to me by men from the spong-ing boats that fish from six to fifteenmiles ofif the mouth of the Anclote River.These birds came on board during hardstorms, generally in March, and beingvery much exhausted were easily cap-tured. The nest of the Purple Gallinule con-sists of a platform of reed stalks directlyover the water, or of grasses, bent andwoven together over a grassy marsh.Upon this platform a rude cradle is con-structed with grasses. Occasionally thenest may be moored to the stems of therushes, or to a bush, where the incom-ing tide raises it, but cannot loosen itsanchors. Mr. Oliver Davie says thatbesides its true nest the Purple Gallinulewill often make as many as five or sixsham nests. 170
