When in afteryears Carl became Professor of Bot-any at the University of Upsala, thename was Latinized into Linnaeus, aswe know it today. The King of Spainbecame much interested in Linnaeus,and conferred upon him the patent ofnobility as Count von Linne, or Countof the Linden Tree, and made him amunificent offer if he would reside inSpain. Linnseus, however, refused,saying that his country .deserved allhe had to give. There was loyalty, said Mabel, ad-miringly, but no answer came fromthe Tree. Bees and insects buzzedabout, birds twittered in the branches,but listen as intently as she would, nosound that she could construe intowords, so rising, she slowly wendedher way homeward.
