The males are jealous loversand there are many fluttering battlesof yellow, steely blue, and white, thoughthese conflicts are generally harmless toboth parties, and serve only to give un-wonted animation to the somber life ofthe swamp woods. Lowland and flooded woods are thehaunts of these attractive Warblers andthere only does it make its home. Forthis reason its popular name GoldenSwamp Warbler is a very appropriateone. MUMFORD, CHICAGO is particularly true in the lowlands bor-dering the larger rivers, and occasion-ally isolated pairs will be found nestingin similar localities along smallerstreams. The nests, which are placedin deserted woodpecker holes, cavities inold stumps or even in deep crevices inold logs are usually plainly lined withrootlets or fibers from bark. Occasion-ally they are more elaborately lined withmoss, feathers, cast off snake skins andother materials suited to the fancyol the birds. Early in the season it isquite difficult to locate the nesting sites, and often one is finally surprised atthe number of pairs nesting in a colony. At Meredosia, Illinois, where I firstmade the acquaintance of these exquisitebirds, I found them nesting on thecomparatively dry river bank. Here, too, I found chickadees nesting andusing excavations precisely like thoseof the Warblers.
