The nightwas cool and the soft cotton was com-fortable, for I was tired, so I lay quietlyuntil I heard mothers voice. I couldsee her through the cracks of the basketand called to her, but she could not atfirst find me. She hopped all over theground, calling and listening and look-ing for me in every corner. Finally shefollowed my voice up the tree and camehopping out on the branch over myhead, then onto the edge of the basket,so lightly it hardly moved with herweight, and then down she hoppedbeside me. How glad I was to cuddleunder her wing! So this is the end ofmy story. I am living in the basket.Mother is taking care of me until Ishall be strong enough to go out in theworld alone, and every now and thenthe House People come softly to seeif I am safe. 57 SNOWY OWL. (Nyctoa nyrlua). ^, Lifcsi/o. iMFOHO. rHir*,,o THE SNOWY OWL. (Nyctea nyctea.) This large and beautiful Owl has beencall the Spirit of boreal regions. Itsrange is circumpolar, and its summerhome is in the Arctic regions of theNorthern hemisphere, where its dense,white robe of feathers makes it almostinvisible in a region of nearly perpetualsnow. In the winter, when food be-comes more scarce, these Owls migratesouthward, some passing into the Unit-ed States, a few even reaching SouthCarolina, Texas, California and Ber-muda. While it is not probable thatany large number migrate very farsouth of the arctic regions, there areinstances when a large number haveappeared along the Atlantic seaboard.Mr. Ruthven Dean reports that in thewinter of 1876 and 1877 he knew offive hundred being seen, the larger num-ber of which were shot, in New Eng-land alone.
