e of lowannuals belonging to the genus Evaxand related to the everlastings, eitherSpanish moss, wool or raw cotton maymake up nearly the whole bulk of thenest and rags, hair, twine, feathers, bitsof paper, dry grass, and even seaweedsmay be incorporated in the mass.Nests have been seen which were com-posed almost entirely of cotton twineand a few twigs. The nests are linedwith feathers or some other handy softmaterial. Both parents assist in feeding theiryoung, exclusively insect food. As thesummer advances, both young and oldcongregate in the fields and prairies be-fore they begin their southward migra-tion. The Scissor-tails are useful aswell as ornamental birds, for their foodsmainly consists of insects and they con-sume large numbers of grasshoppers,locusts and cotton worms. They alsoeat berries to a limited extent. As theygracefully and slowly fly from tree totree they frequently utter rather softtwittering notes which have been lik-ened, in sound, to the syllables pscc-pscc. J04

AMONG THE TREES. THE MAPLE. Mabel stood looking- at the pine-crowned hills, which rose tier above tierlike mighty terraces. A great glory hadfallen over the woods, for they haddonned their autumnal garments, mak-ing terraces of red and bronze. Theevergreens looked like great castles withtowers and citadels; the elms and pop-lars were golden steeples, gilded domesand minarets which quivered and glis-tened in the sunlight; the ashes lenttheir lavender and purple tints; thesumacs and red maples flung out theirscarlet banners. What glorious robesthey wore after all the green riot ofsummer! Mabel thought of the old Indianlegend and, with her minds eye, shesaw the Great Father sitting idly on themountain-top, smoking his long pipe ofpeace and blowing the smoke into allthe valleys, for Indian Summer wasnow king and his purple haze lay onthe distant hill-tops, filled the valleybeneath and bounded the horizon on allsides.
