like that of the robin. The favoritehaunts of this Thrush are in the openwoodlands, near the banks of streamsand among the bushes which afford aready and a safe retreat. The food of the Hermit Thrush con-sists of ants, beetles, caterpillars andgrasslioppers. In Bulletin Number 3, ofthe Illinois State Laboratory of NaturalHistory, Professor S. A. Forbes recordsthe following data: Eighty-four percent of the food is insects, four per centspiders and twelve per cent thousand-legs. The insect food was made up asfollows : Ants, fifteen per cent; butter-flies and caterpillars, nineteen per cent;beetles, thirty per cent; hemiptera orbugs, eight per cent; grasshoppers, eightper cent. From these data it will be seenthat the Hermit Thrush is a very valua-ble bird and should be rigorously protect-ed by farmers and agriculturists.
