s. One of the sailors made Jack a smallchest in which he keeps all his littletreasures and playthings. None of thecrew ever think of going ashore withoutbringing something back for Jack, andthose that are handy with a knife em-ploy their spare time whittling outthings to amuse him. The greatest treasure Jack owns is asmall looking-glass. He seems to under-stand that the face he sees in it is hisown, for he will smirk and grin andmake faces at himself with high glee atthe result. Jack is a first-class sailor. He isalways kept under cover during a storm,so that he will not be washed overboard;but he is never sick or frightened, nomatter what the weather or how muchthe vessel rolls and pitches. Head upor head down is all the same to Jack. He seldom goes ashore and is asanxious as the sailors to leave port andget under sail again. On the whole. Jack is about as happyas it is possible for a monkey to be, andlife on shipboard would be dull withoutthe merry little fellow. Martha R. Fitch. 56

The Lesser Scaup, Black-head, Blue-bill, Creek-broadbill, Raft-duck, Shuf-fler and Flocking-fowl are some of thenimierous names applied to this species.Three varieties of scaup ducks inhabit theNorth American continent: the Ameri-can or greater scaup, the Lesser Scaupand the ring-necked scaup. When mi-grating, the Lesser Scaup frequents bothfresh and salt water, but during thebreeding- season it is seldom seen ex-cepting near the fresh waters of theinterior. In general appearance and habits thisDuck is scarcely distinguishable fromthe greater scaup, excepting in size; thelength of the latter bird being seventeenand three-quarters inches, or about oneand one-half inches longer than theLesser Scaup. In many localities it is unquestionablythe most abundant of the various speciesof ducks. This is true of the CalumetRegion of Northern Illinois and Indiana. The Little Scaup furnishes royal sportto the gunn
