Ascending to the nest,I found five bluish slate-colored eggsspeckled with black and with under shellmarkings of pale blue, which gave acloudy or smoky appearance to the eggs.Another nest, holding four incubatedc&gs, was discovered on August six-teenth in the vicinity of the former nest.A typical egg of this species measureseighty-eight-hundredths of an inch inlength and sixty-two-hundredths of aninch in breadth. At twilight, when the sun had droppedbehind the timber, as I stroll through thelane, betwixt orchard and meadow, I lis-ten to the carol of the vesper sparrow,and the pe-chiek of the night hawk.The mournful cooing of the turtle doveechoes from the woodlands. It is likethe cry of a human being in distress. Zee-eep, zee-eep-eep-eep issues from ascore of throats, as a group of small birdsskim the tree tops, turn about and settleon the topmost branches of the appletrees.
