The weasel was not long indiscovering the location of his much cov-eted game. Again and again he wouldapproach tO a point within easy reachof my hand. But the very first movementof a muscle on my part, almost before Iwas conscious of it myself, seemed to bedetected by him, and quick as thoughthe was away. At last, when I seemed tohave my hand within three or four inchesof him—ready to grasp him, if possible—he sprang forward, seized the chipmunkand scampered off with almost the swift-ness of lightning. I would like to have cultivated hisacquaintance further, for I could not butadmire him for his pluck and boldness,as well afe for his agility. Among the common fungi whichattract a pedestrian during his ramblesthrough a forest, there is one groupwhich has been given the name Polystic-tns by the scientist. This is a genus ofbracket-hke species which are leathery,woody or membranous from the verybeginning of their growth. They arepore-fungi; that is, the fruiting sporesare borne on the inner faces of tubes orpores which form a single layer on theunderside of the bracket. These tubesusually appear first near the center of thebracket and gradually develop toward itscircumference. It thus happens thatwhile the tubes near the periphery of theplant are scarcely tubes at all, but meredots or shallow excavations, the olderones toward the center are developed intodefinite tubular forms and may be quitelong.
