Among the common fungi whichattract a pedestrian during his ramblesthrough a forest, there is one groupwhich has been given the name Polystic-tns by the scientist. This is a genus ofbracket-hke species which are leathery,woody or membranous from the verybeginning of their growth. They arepore-fungi; that is, the fruiting sporesare borne on the inner faces of tubes orpores which form a single layer on theunderside of the bracket. These tubesusually appear first near the center of thebracket and gradually develop toward itscircumference. It thus happens thatwhile the tubes near the periphery of theplant are scarcely tubes at all, but meredots or shallow excavations, the olderones toward the center are developed intodefinite tubular forms and may be quitelong.
