nests I havestudied; for it is dry and odorless andwhen examined under the microscopeshows the characteristic shapes of thepollen grains—tiny footballs, green andyellow lay among spiked yellow globesand light green crescents. The egg is placed on top of this food-mass, a rose leaf lid is firmly glued tothe top of the cell, and if no parasite hasplaced its egg in the cell during theMegachiles absence, the young bee hasa safe and comfortable place in which topass its youth. As is seen from the pollen in the nest,the Megachile visits many different flow-ers, but it does not fly first to one speciesand then to another, but visits manyflowers of the same sort, a marvelousadaptation which aids in the develop-ment of the plants. The legs are with-out the baskets of the bumble-bee andare covered with short rather sparsehairs, but the pollen is carried in thebranched hairs under the abdomen,which are thick and long, making an ad-mirable arrangement for holding pollen.
