form, the Vireosnest is always a deep cup, about two-thirds of a sphere in its form, and trun-cated at the top. It is usually suspendedfrom the fork of two, and even more, converging twigs, the margin being veryneatly overwoven so as to embrace andcover them. The nests are generally soplaced that they are well concealed bythick foliage, especially from above. Thehabits, too, of all the Vireos are interest-ing. While some of the species do notalways shun the habitations of man andwill build their nests on the pendantbranches of the trees of gardens, road-sides, parks and public squares, most ofthe Vireos are unknown excepting to theclose students of nature. Searching thecrevices in the bark and the under sur-face of leaves for their food, these birdsare quite hidden from view. Then, too, many of the species frequent only thelarger growths of forests. But they arehappy in their work and sing or uttertheir call-notes quite throughout the day.Of one of the Vireos the poet has writ-ten : 216

MUMFORD, CHICAGO. = Sweet little prattler, whom the morning sun Found singing, and this livelong summer day Keeps warbling still: here have I dreamed away Two bright and happy hours, that passed like one,Lulled by thy silvery converse, just begunAnd never ended. Throughout eastern North America, east of the Great Plains and from Flor-ida to Newfoundland and Manitoba, theYellow-throated Vireo frequents the treetops of forest, orchard, and lawn, sel-dom descending from the upper storyof his home. In this habitat this Vireomay be easily known by its habits andby the bright yellow color of its breast. To the initiated, its song and its callnotes are also a ready means of identifi-cation. While it is a bird of the forests, especially the forests of lowlands, itshabits vary greatly and are adapted to thelocality in which it may have located.Excepting the time of nesting, when thisbeauty
