ilanthropist would havebeen. At the first peep of daylight, mothercatbird bustled out to see how her fos-ter children had fared through the night. Her cares had been heavy enough be-fore, and this business of caring for twofamilies soon told on her. These two little missionaries neverseemed to weary of their work, and whenthe robins were ready to leave their nestthey were taken out and practised upand down, and back and forward untilthey were quite able to fly. And. oh,what a relief it was when they could takecare of themselves! Xot that one mo-ment of care had ever been begrudgedthem, but it had been a great responsibil-ity. There always seemed to be a tie ofrelationship between the two families.and many pleasant reunions were heldthrough the summer. Elizabeth Roberts Burtox. THE MILKWEED. FROM COL. CHI. ACAD. SCIENCES. 586 COPYRIGHT 1903, BY A. W. MUMFORO, CHICAGO. WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN (Winter plumage)(Lagopus leucurus). THE WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN. (Lagopus leucurus.) The White-tailed Ptarmigan is an in-habitant of the alpine summits of themountain ranges of western NorthAmerica. Its breeding range is coinci-dent with its geographical distributionand extends from Alaska to New Mex-ico, but is limited to the higher moun-tains and is always above timber line. This bird rarely leaves these great heightsexcept in the most severe weather of win-ter, when it rarely descends below an al-titude of eight thousand feet, though ithas been taken at a height of only twothousand feet. It is a beautiful bird and an excellentillustration of protective coloration, thedarker color of the summer plumage wellharmonizing with its somber surround-ings, while the white of its winter dressmatches the snow of the mountainsides. When sitting on its nest sonearly does the bird resemble the gray
